Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 18, 2026
Maybe Not is built around one promise: we don't read your messages, and we don't keep them. This page lays out exactly how that works.
The short version
- No accounts. No email or password required.
- Your messages stay on your phone. We don't store them on our servers.
- The AI reads each message once, in the moment, then forgets.
- We collect anonymous usage data (which screens you visit, how often you use the app) so we can improve it. We do not collect your message content.
- We don't track you across other apps or websites.
- We don't sell your data to anyone.
What we collect
To run the app and improve it, Maybe Not collects the following:
- Anonymous device identifier. A random ID generated on your phone. Not linked to your name, email, or phone number.
- Usage events. Which screens you open, which buttons you tap, how long you spend on each screen. These are sent to PostHog, our analytics provider, with the anonymous device ID only.
- Diagnostic data. Crash reports and performance data, so we can fix bugs.
- Subscription status. Whether you have an active subscription, managed by RevenueCat.
What we do NOT collect
- The text of any message you check or save in the journal.
- The text of any AI-generated read or rewrite.
- The names of any people you add to "Your people" in Settings. Names live only on your phone.
- Your real name, email, or phone number.
- Your contacts.
- Your location.
- Any biometric data. App Lock uses your phone's Face ID or Touch ID directly. We never see the result of the scan, only that authentication succeeded.
How the AI works
When you tap "Check This Message," the text you typed is sent to our server (hosted on Cloudflare Workers). Our server forwards the text to OpenAI's API for analysis, then sends the response back to your phone.
Neither our server nor OpenAI retains the message content after the response is sent. We do not log or store the message text in any database. OpenAI's data retention policies for API calls are described at openai.com/policies/api-data-usage-policies.
Your journal stays on your phone
The journal of past reads, your saved vents, and your list of named people are all stored locally on your device using your phone's secure storage. They are not backed up to our servers. If you uninstall the app, this data is deleted.
Subscriptions
Subscriptions are managed by Apple's App Store and processed through RevenueCat. We never see your payment information, credit card number, or Apple ID. RevenueCat tells us only whether your subscription is active.
Third parties we use
- Cloudflare: hosts our worker that talks to the AI.
- OpenAI: provides the AI that reads your message.
- PostHog: anonymous product analytics. We never send message content to PostHog.
- RevenueCat: subscription management.
- Superwall: paywall display.
- Apple: App Store distribution and in-app purchases.
Your rights
Because we don't collect anything that identifies you, there's nothing personal to access, correct, or delete on our side. Your journal lives on your phone and you can clear it any time from the History screen.
To stop the anonymous analytics, you can email support@maybenotapp.com with your device's anonymous ID (visible in the app under Settings, in a future release) and we'll remove the associated events.
Children
Maybe Not is rated 17+ and is not designed for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to how we handle data, we'll update this page and bump the "last updated" date at the top. For significant changes, we'll show you a notice in the app.
